Where the wild things are decoding picture books. People made pictures even before they talked or wrote. Pictures have been found on cave walls from hundreds of thousands of years ago. In the 15th and 16th century, printing changed the situation completely. One could now publish multiple books at the same time. Orbis sensualium pictus (the world in pictures) by johann amos comenius was the first children"s book. He believed in the power of pictures more than the power of text and found it as a better option to teach through. Heinrich hoffman"s struwwelpeter is also an example of a german early picture book. In the 1940s inexpensive picture books for children began to appear. Mid 20th century is considered the golden period for children"s books. Many immigrants who came to different countries started writing children"s books too. It helps in understanding the story as it represents the story visually.
