HUMA 1780 Lecture 3: Response #1

123 views2 pages

Document Summary

Since the beginning of human existence, or maybe even before, we have been telling stories. Stories have had many purposes over time, ranging from entertainment to warnings and ways to pass on knowledge to future generations. Immortality is something that many have wasted their entire lives trying to achieve. I believe that is what makes it such an important theme in stories. Like something forbidden to a child, it is forever beyond our grasp and that only makes us want it even more. We cannot achieve it and so we must satisfy ourselves by telling stories about it, regardless of whether the protagonist has achieved their goal or not. In this week"s readings, both gilgamesh and rufus are on a quest for immortality, and while their objectives are the same, many of their experiences are very different. Gilgamesh is a king and rufus is not.
