Document Summary

In plato"s phaedrus, socrates discusses, at great length, the difference between spoken word and written word. His main argument appears to be that spoken word, and therefore, knowledge is much better than written word. He says that written word is only an image, true knowledge is much more. In order to support his argument, socrates provides multiple reasons, including examples. If you ask the artist a question they remain silent. The same, socrates claims, can be said about words. It can be imagined that words possess intelligence, but they can provide no new explanation towards anything. If i state a phrase, it can only mean so many things. Once all meaning has been derived from it, nothing more can be taken. It cannot mean cup" or book", which have entirely different meanings. Socrates continues by saying that something much better than written word is knowledge. If someone wants to learn, and does so, they can defend their knowledge.
