What importance was placed on prefaces and on speeches in ancient histories: prefaces allowed the author the opportunity to defend his credibility. They alerted the reader to the author"s ability as a writer, as well as the scope of their work/research. It was typical in a preface to include other sources and mention the use of information passed down (often by oral tradition) to the author. The author could use a certain speech to t the occasion for which he was writing. However, authors didn"t often try to reproduce speeches in the exact words in which they were spoken. The author would have most likely recounted the speech in such a way that re ected his research, as well the information brought to light during such research. For example: some of the speeches delivered by christian leaders to other. Christians were given as a means of instruction, or apologies, or in the context of evangelism.
