Disability rights movement: began in 1970"s in united kingdom by people with disabilities, people wanted a social change to allow more access for people disabilities. Wanted to change disability form medical to social issue. People wanted to be included in society not marginalized (institutionalized: major victories were achieved by this movement. Adoption of disabilities act in us and uk. People began to learn of disability and a social change erupted. Under charter of rights and freedoms people with disabilities are protected: impairment: injury, illness, or congenital condition that causes or is likely to cause. Impairment vs disability a loss or difference of physiological or psychological function. Occurs within person: disability: the loss or limitations of opportunities to take part in society on an equal level with others due to social and environments. Occurs within society: medical model: impairment + diagnosis = disability.
