Document Summary

The stages outlined are standard worldwide for the most part however chronologically they are not defined given the different life expectancies over the world. In some places stages begin at different times because of shorter life spans. Old age is understood in relation to childhood, youth, middle age, etc. and vice-versa. We construct, negotiate and interpret aging in our interactions with one another. Different meanings depending upon our sense of self in time, as well as our sense of others. The social, political and historical context within which we age is critical. Being a young adult now as opposed to in the past is very different. Before mid-17th century children were seen as mini-adults. It wasn"t until then when people realized that childhood is a sanctuary before the perils and hardships of adulthood . Notion of childhood emerged during victorian era. Ironic given the rise of child labour during industrial revolution.
