KINE 1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Peripheral Neuropathy, Glucose Tolerance Test, Diabetes Mellitus Type 2
Document Summary
It was accidentally discovered that surgical removal of the pancreas caused diabetes. How insulin works: pancreas is tucked in behind your stomach, one type is beta cell produce insulin & when the body needs it, it gets. All cells, which will use glucose for energy, have insulin receptors sitting right on their membrane. The insulin binds there & that stimulates the glucose transporters to open up & bring the glucose in. This means not as many cells can take insulin: glucose isn"t getting into cells so they don"t have the energy that they need. Symptoms of type i diabetes: unexplained rapid weight loss. Benefits of exercise: acute decrease in blood glucose levels, acute means immediately, one time only, chronic decrease in blood glucose levels, reduced insulin requirement. Increases lean muscle mass: psychological effects (improved mood, sense of well-being, self-esteem, exercise provides another route for glucose to get into a cell.
