Lecture 15, the blood blood is about 8% of total body weight: average blood volume for women is 5l and for men it"s 5. 5l, 3 types of cells found in the plasma portion, erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets. When blood is spun in a centrifuge: 45% of it is the hematocrit, which is the erythrocyte cell volume. By de nition however hematocrit is the volume of all the cells. It is just used as a stand in for red blood cell volume because thats what most of it is. (99%: 55% of it is plasma, less than 1% is the bu y coat, which is leukocytes and platelets. Plasma (55% of whole blood volume: is made up of 90% water, electrolytes, nutrients, wastes, gases, hormones, plasma proteins: albumins, globulins, brinogen. The water helps carry heat from areas where it is generated (heat regulation), and it acts as a transport medium electrolytes (your salts like sodium, potassium, chloride, or calcium).
