KINE 2011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Biological System, Homeostasis, Organism
Document Summary
Levels of organization in physiology: chemical components and how they interact, or we can go all the way to look at the body on a whole organismal level. Chemical > cellular > tissue > organ > body system > organism. Cells are the basic unit of life: humans have eukaryotic cells (animal cells) Tissues (4 types) are groups of specialized cells that have similar functions and structures: muscle: its made for contracting and generating force. We have skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle: nervous: its made to have cells that transmit electrical impulses, epithelial: has cells that function to exchange materials between the cell and its environment. Exocrine secrete to the outside of the body. Endocrine glands secrete directly into the blood stream: connective: is made to connect, support, and anchor the body parts. This type of tissue doesn"t have a lot of cells, it instead has a matrix with proteins in it.
