Peripheral Endocrine Glands
Secretion of Thyroid Hormones
-Follicular Cells are major secretory cells. Produce two iodine-containing hormones: (T4
or thyroxine) or triiodothyronine (T3)About 90% of hormone secreted is T4, 10% is in T3.
-Thyroid hormones are important regulates for metabolic rate. T3 & T4 differ in their
speed & intensity of action
-C-cells secrete hormones calcitonin role in calcium metabolism
-Every tissue in body is affect directly or indirectly by thyroid hormone.
T3 & T4
-More T4 is released than T3. T3 is more potent in activity. Most T4 secreted is converted
to T3, or activated by being stripped of one iodine in liver or kidney. Most T3 circulating
is derived from T4. Even though T4 is secreted more by thyroid gland, T3 is major
biologically active form of thyroid hormone
Effect of Metabolic Rate & Heat Production
-Hormone increases body’s metabolic rate- rate of O2 consumption & energy
expenditure under resting condition
-Increase metabolic activity results in increased heat production
Effect on Growth & Nervous System
-Thyroid hormone stimulates GH secretion & increases production of IGF by liver

Document Summary

Produce two iodine-containing hormones: (t4 or thyroxine) or triiodothyronine (t3)about 90% of hormone secreted is t4, 10% is in t3. Thyroid hormones are important regulates for metabolic rate. T3 & t4 differ in their speed & intensity of action. C-cells secrete hormones calcitonin role in calcium metabolism. Every tissue in body is affect directly or indirectly by thyroid hormone. Most t4 secreted is converted to t3, or activated by being stripped of one iodine in liver or kidney. Even though t4 is secreted more by thyroid gland, t3 is major biologically active form of thyroid hormone. Hormone increases body"s metabolic rate- rate of o2 consumption & energy expenditure under resting condition. Increase metabolic activity results in increased heat production. Thyroid hormone stimulates gh secretion & increases production of igf by liver. Thyroid deficient children have stunted growth than can be revered by thyroid replacement therapy. Unlike excess gh, excess thyroid hormone doesn"t produce excessive growth.
