Angela davis: political activist in 70s, put in jail for attempted murder of police officer, guilty of trying to disseminate bad ideas, trying to change society, social change in 60s, black panther party, research in prison. Trying to connect her personal experience to woman in the past (women like her) traditions** Black women who tried to defend rights and protect their community-- heroes. Was no discussion of blacks in literature she looked through in jail and therefore she started writing. Not just about blacks but a larger topic; trying to open base for everyone. Majority of slave men were field workers. Not a lot of women slaves in the house, the money* was working in the field. Marxis analysis: competition for resources, always a struggle, power. Marxis approach in reading: social phenomenon can be seen through economical lenses. What happens in base goes to superstructure. Base= mode of production; the way goods and services are used, distributed and sold.
