KINE 2475 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Basal Metabolic Rate, Blood Pressure, Deiodinase
Document Summary
Th important in brain development (axonal & dendritic development, myelinatin, cell migration) Increased co & systolic blood pressure important for hyperthyroidism. Increase o2 consumption by muscles leading to muscular weakness important for hyperthyroid. Th increases sensitivity of target tissues to catecholamines elevated lipolysis, glycogenolysis & glycogenosis. Liver cell has t4/t3 coming into cell & it acts like lipid hormone (instead of binding to surface receptor, passes through nucleus) In liver, have de-ionization of t4 to t3 which is done by microsomal deiodinase. Diffuse & nodular goiter: benign toxic conditions (hyperthyroid) Diffuse vs nodular goiter difference is how they look like anatomically. Diffuse goiter is increase in size of thyroid gland, feels smooth. Conditions: graves" disease, metastatic thyroid cancer, hyperthyroidisms in nodular goiter. Graves is most common cause of thyrotoxicosis in humans. Graves" disease (aka toxic diffuse goiter) is autoimmune disorder that leads to overreactive thyroid gland.
