When you are loosing heat, general metabolic activity increases fat is used less as a body source, when exposed to cold for long period of times thyroxin levels may increase (hormone to increase metabolic rate) Intrinsic lack of preparation (exposed to environments not prepared for) Lack of proper clothing (adding layers of clothing creating more vasoconstriction, best strategy: a pair of wool socks) Body type ectomorph: low body fat. Alcohol and tobacco: cns stimulant, vaso-constriction, hypertension. Core temperature may be maintained while shell temperature drops drastically. Deep frost bite tissue damage not reversed, superficial can be reversible. Systemic body cooling wind increases the loss of body temperature.
