KINE 3020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Supplementary Motor Area, Premotor Cortex, Basal Ganglia
Document Summary
Functions of m1: motor cortex 1 is involved in the execution of movement. When m1 is damaged, you can get paralysis. This paralysis can be permanent if it is spinal, or temporary if it is cortical. Paresis: slight or incomplete paralysis, or just general weakness and loss of movement. You end up losing ne motor control, so you can"t move as much. Hemiplegia: complete or partial paralysis to one half of the body. It mostly a ects one side rather than the other. Neural plasticity: the ability of the brain to change the way it communicates with neurons and the spinal cord. This means that if you injure a certain body part, through training you can. Rewire the way your brain communicates with those neurons so that you can more e ectively use that body part. This only applies to m1 lesions, and not spinal cord ones because those are permanent.
