Gerontology: branch of knowledge dealing w aging, aging e ects of indv and impacts on society. Indv and impacts on society. Geron and ontus - meaning old man. Baby boomers turning 60,70 have large impact. Used to be looked at as negadve (social aspect) Now has a posidve spin on aging: acdve aging, successful aging, independence. A lot of research done now (especially related w exercise) Aging is not a problem in canada but a challenge. Geriatrics: branch of medicine dealing w diseases of aging. A lot of older ppl are misdiagnosed, mistreated. A lot of elderly but not enough geriatric doctors (4% of specialists) Seeing sick seniors is demoralizing for medical students. Time consuming speciality (3 years internal, 2 years geriatrics) Not enough pay (fee for service can make more money 1- 2m) Have complex diseases that are usually treatable but take dme. If untreated, can become dependent.
