Pulse
Initially: Strong, rapid pulse and constricted
pupils
Later: Weak, rapid pulse and dilated pupils
o Risk Factors
Intrinsic
Weight, age, sendentary lifestyle,
acclimation, history of heat illness, and lack
of sleep
Extrinsic
Intense prolonged exercise, lots of clothing
or equiptment, high temperature, high
humidity
o Diagnosis
Rectal temperature is the gold standard (104 or
higher)
o Treatment
Ice-water immersion
100% Survival rate within “Golden Hour”
Water temp: 35-58°F
Maintain ABCs
Call 911 after cooling (after they get in tub)
Remove when core temp reaches 101-102°F
