Lecture 9
▪ Pulse
• Initially: Strong, rapid pulse and constricted
pupils
• Later: Weak, rapid pulse and dilated pupils
o Risk Factors
▪ Intrinsic
• Weight, age, sendentary lifestyle,
acclimation, history of heat illness, and lack
of sleep
▪ Extrinsic
• Intense prolonged exercise, lots of clothing
or equiptment, high temperature, high
humidity
o Diagnosis
▪ Rectal temperature is the gold standard (104 or
higher)
o Treatment
▪ Ice-water immersion
• 100% Survival rate within “Golden Hour”
• Water temp: 35-58°F
• Maintain ABCs
• Call 911 after cooling (after they get in tub)
• Remove when core temp reaches 101-102°F
