KINE 4520 Lecture Notes - Lecture 39: Social Comparison Theory
Document Summary
Principles of effective goal setting: make goals specific, measurable, and observable. Specific goal is one that focuses exactly on the goal to be achieved. Measurable: quantify in the sense that u know exactly how close u are to achieving the goal. Moderately difficult goal group outperformed easy and very difficult groups. Controversy: probem of controlling for social comparison btw diff members of diff training groups thus used larger sample size and diff schools. Smart: specific, measurable, action oriented, realistic, timely: write goals down and regular monitor progress. Research shows that coaches do not consistently write down goals. Weight trainers keep daily log of amount of weight and number of reps. Has more control over process and performance goals vs outcome: use short range goals to achieve long range goals, set team as well as individual performance goals. Ex) five week bowling performance: set practice as well as comp goals. Practice goals very effective in improving tennis performance.
