Anaphylaxis: a severe allergic reaction, life threatening to any stimulus or allergen, having sudden onset, involving one or more body systems. It is estimated that 1% or 2% of canadians are at a risk of anaphylaxis (from food and insect allergy). Food allergies affects up to 6% of young children in north america. Food: peanuts, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts (almond, hazel, walnut) Food: soy, sesame, wheat, sulphite, latex, exercise (they have a complex immune system disorder) Can involve several body systems alone or in combination: Skin, upper and lower respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular systems. Can occur within minutes or up to about two hours. Skin may develop: (these signs are not always present) Total body: hives, rash, itchiness, red, weakness, loss of consciousness. First line treatment for anaphylaxis, use immediately. Use additional prescribe medications only after epinephrine (asthma inhalers or anti- histamines) Can open vessel constriction (increases blood pressure), reduce swelling, opens the airway, increase the heart rate.
