September 30 • Relaxation skills- breathing skills (5-20 mins). Progressive relaxation therapy (tense all muscles and release), replace bad thoughts with good ones, exercise • Substance use, misuse, and abuse • 13% Canadians used illegal drugs in past year, 1%addicted • risks- infection, mental/physical problems, addiction, death, social problems, legal problems, physiological dependence • routs of administration- intravenous injections (most dangerous, magnifies effect, contamination), subcutaneous injection, intramuscular injection (slower than intravenous), inhalation, oral dosage. • Dosage and toxicity- there is a physiological threshold to the amount you can handle, tolerance can drop after threshold is broken. Liver main organ that helps handle drugs. Detoxifying enzymes. • Toxicity- defined when the drug has poisonous effects to the body causing temporary or permanent damage • Over the counter meds. (OTC)- laxatives, nasal sprays, eye drops, cough syrup, pain killers • Prescription meds. Ex. oxycontin (derivative of cocaine, pain killer). Includes narcotics (block pain in brain), sedatives and tranquilizers, stimulants • Marijuana (+) short term effects- minimize pain, increase euphoria, vision, combats vomiting, restores appetite in people who have lost weight (cancer/AIDS), calm muscle spasms from spinal cord injury, MS improvement • (-) long ter
