September 23, 2009 KINE 2049 .Professor is assuming that the labs are working okay as he has not heard otherwise. .There are 3 components to the class - lectures, labs and readings in your textbook are at the back of your book. Research terms .Research hypothesis versus null hypothesis >only the null hypothesis can be tested. .Hypothesis is a prediction based on existing knowledge. .Fact - "consistently observed event" the scientific method develops facts. .As a result of conducting experiments we develop lots of facts. Theory - integrates many facts into an explanation of a phenomenon or a belief about how things relate to each other. .Example every time he drops the remote it goes down to the carpet. .A theory could be trying to relate a bunch of facts together. Theory [Cheers - Cliff Clavin] .One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the "Buffalo Theory" to his buddy, Norm, Here it is... .Well ya' see Norm, it's like this...A herd of buffalo can only... (professor changed slides) .In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells, But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. .In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, ....(Professor changed slides) Principle - guides behavior based on theories and facts (e.g. exercise daily) Law - specific statement usually expressed in the form of a mathematical equation Page 1 of4 >CRT = a + b Log 2 2N The choice reaction time is a function of the reaction time. .Article - "The fat hits the fan" .The food guides have switched and tell you not to each high fatty foods. .Is it possible the notion of low fat is not good for you? .There are alternate hypothesis. .When you eat a certain amount of fat it turns off the food mechanism. .The idea that low fat is good might not be correct. .Eating lots of carbs and proteins may be causing this epidemic of obesity. Article "Take the low-fat dogma with a grain of salt." .Is the low fat the right way to go? Hypothesis - implies insufficient evidence: serves as tentative explanation. Theory - implies more supporting evidence and a greater likelihood of truth Law - implies an invariable relationship and the greatest likelihood of truth. .It is very likely that we have discovered a truth. .Galileo had this notion that the earth was the centre of the universe and it was the sun. .His beliefs did not coincide with what the church believed at this time. .Vatican recasts him as a "heretic" .Charles Darwin - he stated that species evolved over time.
