Document Summary

A very large amount of blood can be diverted to skeletal muscle when you are exercising: when you are increasing blood ow to one part of the body, you have to compensate by reducing another body. In this case, the blood ow to the digestive system and the kidney gets reduced the volume of the blood going to the skin increases so you can thermoregulate and cool down. The brain however continues to receive 650 ml of blood no matter what. They do this thanks to their ability to contract and change diameter to e ect ow: arterioles contain two di erent types of cells; endothelium cells & vascular smooth muscle cells. Smooth muscle cells are called smooth muscle because their actin and myosin laments aren"t organized in that striated pattern of skeletal muscle. Instead, they are in sort of a lattice structure that causes the cells to squish up on itself when it contracts.
