Ex; aspirated k in kit unaspirated k in skit. Sound is modified by the environment relationship between 2 phonemic segments(sections) Pair (set) of words that differ by just one sound. Provides phonetic information for the pronunciation of utterances. Conventions exist for abbreviating the environment statement # __; __ #; v__v; etc. So, english /p/ [ p ] / # __"v p ->aspirated p = puff of air. /p/ [p ] at the beginning of the word. [ p ] / __ {cstop, #} bracket shows they are options.
