Types of word meaning relationships include hyponymy, synonymy, polysemy,homonymy and antonymy. A hyponym is a word whose meaning is a speci c instance of a more general term. Synonyms are words that have the same (or nearly the same) meaning. Polysemy refers to a single word having di erent but related meanings. Paper (meaning a sheet of paper or a newspaper) Mark (meaning a written symbol or an assigned grade) Homonyms are words that are pronounced the same but have di erent and unrelated meanings. Antonyms are words that are opposites with respect to some aspect of their meaning. Antonyms can be further classi ed as gradable, complementary or relational. Gradable antonyms are those where more of the one term implies less of the other. Complementary antonyms are those where the negation of one term implies the meaning of another. Relational antonyms are words that characterize a reciprocal relationship.
