Document Summary

Sense of evenness in design or in art. Various types of balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. Talks about the weight of the image. Discuss composition, contents, styles, stress, emphasis, and other key factors. Symmetrical balance: both sides of the design are symmetrical, can be top/bottom or left/right, visual weight is near identical. Asymmetrical balance: varies in spacing, not identical on both sides, can be top/bottom or left/right, somewhat imbalanced in one way or another, can be created using alternating design, also can be done with text vs. graphics. For example, on a book cover, one side has a large tree graphic, and the other side has the name of the book in extravagant lettering. The design is asymmetrical and has two separate elements on each side. But it is still considered balance if the typeface/lettering of the words is up to par with, or comparable to, the graphic on the other side. Sides need to be different enough in composition.
