Document Summary

A friend of socrates (crito) has come to try to convince him to escape from prison. Socrates has been charged with corruption of youth and impiety. In this dialogue socrates and crito discuss justice and socrates outlines the social contract theory of government . Crito tries to convince socrates to escape his jail cell by appealing to two arguments: First, crito argues that in allowing himself to be executed. Socrates is abetting the unethical act of his accusers and thus acting unethically himself. Secondly, crito argues that socrates will be leaving his family w/out a father (and thus acting unethically) Spoiler: ultimately he decides to stay to be executed. The idea is that by remaining in a particular country/society, you"re endorsing the rules of that society. Socrates argues that breaking out of prison would violate a social contract with the state.
