Document Summary

Lecture: midgley says that if you are going to make a judgement, you have to first understand it. You cant respect something that is completely unintelligible to you: when you understand it, you are not necessarily going to make a judgement that is negative. The judgement may actually be positive: edification: the instruction or improvement of a person morally or intellectually, moral isolationism: you can make judgements within your culture but not outside. It does not allow for cross pollination: learning about two separate cultures. Utility principle: act in such a way to maximize the greatest good/happiness for the greatest number : we try to increase policy to improve the society to increase opportunities and create the greatest amount of happiness. Why happiness: happiness because it is progressive and all people want to pursue it. Harm principle: only interfere with the actions of another when that person is harming another. the harm principle is a consequentialist principle.
