Pathos: the appeal to belief and emotion. Kairos: the timeliness and fit of argument. Logos, pathos, & ethos are like different lens which can be used to intensify or soften your argument. Their use does not necessarily strengthen an argument but will influence the effectiveness of your argument in a particular context. Ethos is the trustworthy character of a speaker as artistically created in a speech. This trust is generated not by the reputation of the speaker, but by the argument itself: As a writer, you should: be knowledgeable about your issue present data to back up your claims. Be fair-- demonstrate an understanding of alternative points of view. Build a bridge to your audience ground your argument in shared values and assumption. Demonstrate professionalism grammar, spelling, conventions of your expected audience all matter. According to aristotle- pathos is putting the reader in the right frame of mind". For aristotle, emotions are not necessarily irrational.
