1955: rock around the clock hit the charts. Gospel and jazz, fundamental in shaping certain pieces of music. Back to the beginning of the 20th century. Red, hot jazz functioned to describe upbeat music and didn"t have specific characteristics. A lead with other musicians improvising based on what they heard. Jazz took over u. s in 1920"s, and a film was released in 1925 that attested to the jazz fever. Expansion and popularity of jazz led to the 20"s and 30"s being nicknamed the jazz age. Jazz bands expanded in size, sections of different instruments, 5-6 of each. Relied on written arrangement, no luxury of improvisation, allowing room for a featured solo. Big bands often featured vocalists, and had swing rhythms, the music encouraged people to get up and dance (swung rhythms) By the 30"s, big bands were referred to as swing bands, and this music took over. Wwii- gender roles shift, opening up opportunities for female musicians.
