The purpose of this week"s reading is to give you some vocabulary for a detailed and critical description of music. Pay attention to the many similarities in ways of thinking about and talking about your own primary arts discipline and music. Terms like repetition, variation, colour, texture, etc. , are common to many artistic disciplines. Although the meanings of these terms aren"t exactly the same in the different disciplines, you can use them to access an artistic discipline that is unfamiliar to you. This week"s reading introduces a lot of vocabulary. For some of you, most or even all of this vocabulary is familiar from high school music courses, from your own music practices and that"s great! For others of you, most or all of this vocabulary is new. Over the next ten or so weeks, this vocabulary will become more familiar to you, although not without some effort.
