NATS 1505 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Information Overload, Cognitive Load, Rotten Tomatoes
Document Summary
Credibility is associated with believability, trustworthiness and expertise. Before icts: credibility was from people- authority figures (parents, teachers, government officials)- roles were to verify information before passing it down to the general population- gatekeepers of information. Gatekeepers: people who control access to information. Credibility works well when there is limited sources of information and restrictions on accessing information. Metzger et al. (2010): these conditions create an environment of information scarcity where it is possible for gatekeepers to produce and filter much of the information available, and where those gatekeepers have incentive to uphold credibility standards . Increased ict usage= more information sources that makes it hard to verify the credibility of the information. Now up to the users; new gatekeepers of information, have to determine information credibility when there are other sources that have credible and not so credible information.
