NATS 1570 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Small Solar System Body, Moodle, Hydrosphere
NATS 1570
Introduction
The Solar System
● Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars: the inner terrestrial planets
● Giant Planets:
○ The Gas Giants
■ Jupiter and Saturn
○ The Ice Giants
■ Uranus
■ Neptune
● The Sun
○ There are many other objects in our solar system, this is not a comprehensive
list
● Why do I have to take a natural science course?
○ We live in this world, and science teaches us something about it
○ A process we go about to refine our knowledge
○ It’s part of our lives whether we like it or not
○ We need to deal with everything with a position of reasoning
Course Director: Mary H. Armour
○ Always include nats1570 in the subject line
● Office hours: 152 Chemistry Building by appointment only
● In the Moodle exam section there is information to write the exam at an alternative
exam centre
○ There are additional fees associated with this
The Textbook
● Earth Science Book
So what makes up the solar system?
● Planets
○ Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
○ Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune
○ The sun is much more massive than the other objects in our solar system
● Inner Rocky Planets
○ Sometimes also referred to as the terrestrial planets
● Outer Gas Giants
● Dwarf Planets
○ Another major object
○ Pluto, Eris, Ceres, Makemake and Haumea are now considered dwarf planets
○ Sometimes you will also hear the term “Trans-Neptunian Objects” (TNOs)
being applied to these bodies
○ They are all round
● Small solar system bodies like comets and asteroids
Document Summary
Mercury, venus, earth and mars: the inner terrestrial planets. There are many other objects in our solar system, this is not a comprehensive list. We live in this world, and science teaches us something about it. A process we go about to refine our knowledge. It"s part of our lives whether we like it or not. We need to deal with everything with a position of reasoning. Office hours: 152 chemistry building by appointment only. In the moodle exam section there is information to write the exam at an alternative. Always include nats1570 in the subject line exam centre. There are additional fees associated with this. The sun is much more massive than the other objects in our solar system. Sometimes also referred to as the terrestrial planets. Pluto, eris, ceres, makemake and haumea are now considered dwarf planets. Sometimes you will also hear the term trans-neptunian objects (tnos) being applied to these bodies.
