Structure of skin- two layers of overlying a deeper subcutaneous layer. Each layer consisting of many layers of cells. Collagen and elastic fibres , small blood vessels. Cells become flattened and hardened as they were pushed to surface. About 30 layers of dead flattened keratinized cells (no nuclei , full of keratin , flake off) Fingerprints- thick layer of cell arranged in spiral patterns formed during fetak development when skin is forming. Most numerous- held tightly together by cell junctions. Dead when reach surface, have high keratin amounts. Granstein cells also participate in immune responses. Produce melanin (black brown pigment, contributes to skin colour, extend cell processes between keratinocytes to distribute melanin) Melanin absorbs damaging uv light- protects dna. Tanning increased melanin in keratinocytes at skin surface.
