NATS 1650 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Nasal Septum, Soft Palate, Hard Palate
Document Summary
Divided into two halves by the nasal septum. Septum is made up of bone and cartilage. Bony projections in the nasal cavity; come off the side walls. If not for these conchae, air would go directly into the lungs, and unwanted particles or objects may come into the lungs. More surface areas to trap unwanted foreign objects/particles. Makes air swirl in the cavity; gives it some time to be heated and humidified if necessary. If air that is too cold or too dry gets to the thin walls of the lungs, it can be damaging. Equalize pressure in the ear when necessary. Make pressure in the ear equal to the environment. Eardrum needs equal pressure on both sides. Moving your jaw can open the auditory tube. Catch more than the other tonsils; some people are more susceptible to getting chronic inflammation of these tonsils. Having holes decreases the weight of the skull. To trap foreign particles and humidify air.
