Puberty is the maturation of the testes and ovaries and the secretion of increased amounts of sex hormones: testosterone, estrogen and progesterone. Increased levels of these sex hormones that leads to the changes that we see in puberty; growth, development of secondary sexual characteristics, all directly related to increase in levels of sex hormones. We know that receptors have been present for estrogen and testosterone since the embryonic period of development. If the baby/embryo secretes testosterone at 6-7 weeks of embryonic age the external genitalia will become masculinized. The increased levels of sex hormones lead to the secondary sex characteristics and growth.
