The liver is like a giant chemical factory looks after digestion, takes food that you have consumed and transforms them to nutrients that you need, stores them and even detoxifies (except co2) Bile liquid that the liver sends to the small intestines to help it digest things. Bilirubin needs to be sent to the liver to be detoxified the liver doesn"t have the enzymes to do so consequentially, bilirubin builds up in the tissues. We don"t want the build up of bilirubin to go past a certain concentration. Bilirubin after birth is a normal event some is okay too much is nasty to the brain. Build up = skin turns yellow jaundice not a disease but a symptom. In people who have lots of melanin, yellowness can be seen in the whites of the eyes.
