Scribes interpreted omens in sky for kings. Developed zodiac 12 constellation of equal size within ecliptic. Moat names we use today for zodiac come from mesopotamia. In later mesopotamian eras: moved away from only using sky to detect omons to detecting patterns in sky, to predicting patterns. Used math to predict future movement of planets, eclipse, etc. Enuma anu enlil began in old babylonian +continued observations of variety astronomical phenomena. Month starts when moon is crescent after new moon. Sometimes 12 full moon in 1 year, but solar & lunar calendars became out of sync. Collection of observations with predictions of future motions based on periodic observations.
