Document Summary

Aristotle had a linear system, newton took aristotle"s system and wrapped it to create a colour wheel which included the 7 primaries (roygbiv). This established the correct colour order, and was especially useful for artists. Moses harris created a standardized colour wheel, the painter"s primaries and the r y b + its shades, towards the center. Goethe had a colour wheel and a colour triangle. He issued a book called theory of colours which essentially was a critique of newton"s work and his observations about colour and their emotional impact. His book, was scientifically not well received, but none the less very influential for artists and colour psychology. There was also, a misinterpretation of his observations due to inferior technology. Chevreul systematically observed how colours influence each other. He argued that colours nest to each other will appear as dis similar as possible. Each colour pushes its neighbor in the direction of its compliment.
