The martian atmosphere is so thin, that the sky would normally appear black except for the impact of wind, stirring up and suspending the reddish dust in the air. Total surface area on mars is comparable to the land area of earth. Note the large difference between the northern, rather smooth and flat. 2 hemisphere and the heavily cratered, rugged southern hemisphere.
