Document Summary

Environmental epigenetics alters gene expression but not from a change in the dna base sequence. Follows the kids of individuals who were starving during the 1944-45 dutch. Looked at mothers who were starving 1st trimester but was well nourished last trimester: normal sized babies because most of the growth of fetus is during last trimester, babies had higher obesity rates. Compared with 1st trimester well nourishment, but starving last trimester -> small babies: average had much lower rates of obesity than general population, small babies remained small adults all their lives. Hypomethylation of insulin like growth factor 2 (igf) gene: this gene is highly expressed as a kid, in adult igf1 is important. Experiencing hunger early on in life = predisposition to problems later in life: less methylation in people born during famine. Less methylation = less genes turned on: phosphorylation, acetylation. Heavy methylation inhibits transcription: methylated dna is pssed on to the rest of the stages of the genetics.
