NATS 4210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Environmental Toxicology, Bioassay, Cytochrome P450
Document Summary
Toxicology the study of poisonous substances in human and other organisms. Xenobiotic - any foreign chemical compound to exposed to an organism is (may be of natural or synthetic origin) It"s harmful if it causes damage, irreversible change or increased susceptibility to other stresses (e. g. viral, bacterial, parasitic) The effect of a toxicant may depend on the stage of development or the state of health of the organism. Environmental toxicology studies the health effects of poisons on organisms and ecosystems. Compares chemical substances to determine the degree of toxicity & harm inflicted on organisms and the environment. Usually focuses on humans using other organisms as models or test subjects. Animal bioindicators of health threats: snails and mollusks are used. Sometimes with heavy metals, a little bit is important for the body. Cadmium for example is going to block calcium channel. Asbestos in old buildings (as long as you don"t disturb it it"ll be fine)
