The original purpose of the internet was to exchange data. They were not as interested in accessing data as they were interested to communicating to each other. Susan douglas says that instead of people looking outward and accepting online, we are more isolated and narcissists. She believes that the use of ict has made them isolated, narcissists, and ethnocentric. We have the opportunity and the power to make technologies useful. Information obtained through icts which ae geared toward a homogenous audience which shares the same point of view. We are filtering out all source of information from those things we do not agree with. Homophily: tendency of people to associate with those similar to themselves means the internet usage may not always lead to a diversification of perspectives. "our modern global society is not one huge network, but consists of an enormous number of loosely coupled networks.
