The natural greenhouse effect is the warming of the earth"s atmosphere due to the effect of natural green house gasses. Greenhouse gasses are gasses that are largely transparent to the suns visible radiation but absorb and re emit the earths thermal radiation. They cause a net warming of the earths atmosphere similar to the way in which a glass house traps heat and causes the temperature to rise inside. There is a 33 degree temperature difference due to greenhouse gasses (earth would be. 33 degrees cooler if earth it had no greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere: 255 kelvin (equilibrium temperature) vs 288 kelvin (actual temperature)
