NATS 1675 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Esophagus, Gastric Glands, Gastric Acid
Document Summary
The digestive system consists of the digestive tract (tube) and associated digestive organs such as salivary glands, pancreas, liver and gall bladder. The cavity of the digestive tract is called the lumen. The walls of the digestive tract consist of 4 layers: the lumen is lined with the mucosa (a mucus membrane). 72 -73 for muscle types); the muscularis is responsible for peristalsis; and: the serosa which is the thin outermost covering. Teeth: children have 20 milk or deciduous teeth; adults have 32 teeth, 16 in each jaw: Involuntary & automatic 1) the soft palate elevates and closes of the nasal passages; 2) the epiglottis covers the glottis (the opening of to the larynx); 3) pharyngoesophageal sphincter relaxes and peristalsis propels the food bolus down the esophagus. Sphincters are circular (doughnut-shaped) muscles that function to close an opening or the lumen of a tubular structure.
