Document Summary

Lecture 15 - extra-terrestrial life - part 2. Seti- search for extra-terrestrial intelligence, a project launched by the late carl. Drake"s equation quantifies the chances of success for seti. Life is associated with complex molecules containing carbon. Carbon is produced in stars and therefore life should be found near 2nd or 3rd generations of stars (not in the center of galaxies) Conditions for life include water at the surface of the planet. Planets with surface water are in the habitable zone of the stellar system. Kepler satellite produced indirect evidence for almost 3000 new exoplanets, of which many were in the habitable zones and many of earth size. Many are like gliese 581 d and keppler 22 b, both of earth size and in the habitable zone. In february 2017 nasa discovered a system of 7 earth-type planets at 40 light-years from us.
