Boyle"s law = the pressure exerted by a gas is inversely proportional with the volume of the gas. ( p1v1 = p2v2) At sea level, atmospheric pressure = 760 mm hg or 1 atmosphere (atm) represents the weight of a column of air above an individual. During a dive, the total pressure on a diver is the weight of air column + weight of water column. To avoid confusion, when discussing pressures underwater physiologists often use the abbreviation ata ( atmospheres absolute : ata = total absolute pressure cause by both the water and the air above the water. Max depth of snorkel breathing is about 1 meter due to hydrostatic pressure from surrounding water: you can"t move your respiratory muscles or your thorasic cavity if you"er deeper than 2 meter. 3 types of diving: breath-hold diving (apnea diving) traditional method of diving and remainds a method that is still used to collect food, diving with breathing apparatus.
