Document Summary

A number of participants suggested that generational differences, including the potential for misunderstanding and conflict, cannot be ignored in considering how best to facilitate the transition and retention of entry-level nurses. Of concern to some was the preference of new graduates to work part-time and to avoid evening, night, and weekend shifts. In addition to concerns related to generational differences, participants commented on the changed body of new graduates. No longer are graduates a homogenous group; rather there are women and men of various ages, developmental stages, and ethnic groups, who often also hold many other personal responsibilities in addition to their nursing career. It was noted that these factors present yet other challenges and tensions as these new graduates enter the workplace. Has been attributed to a gap" between theory & practice. The concept remains elusive and ill-defined: often described as a deficit, rather than as a set of clearly articulated and agreed-upon attributes.
