Often formal direct reporting structures are supplemented by what is commonly called a. Dotted line relationship, indicating that a lower-ranking person is formally responsible for supplying all relevant information to the higher-ranked person. Their roles are primarily information-focused; they rarely have the authority to impose decisions on others, especially those in other groups. One example might be an engineer in a product development group who is assigned the task of communicating on a regular basis with the marketing group that will sell the new product. The liaison role is often not a full- time responsibility, but is combined with other activities. The integrator has some carrots and sticks with which to reinforce the role (such as the integrator"s having a role in the performance evaluation of other actors involved, a budget line to provide resources, etc. ) Product, brand, geographic, program, and account managers are all examples of formal integrator roles.
