Lecture 28
Decision rules operating procedures
o Ex. Consensus
Some groups discuss consensus rule majority rules,
only after it becomes clear that consensus cannot be
achieved
o Develop a matrix fill in interests (the reason your opponents
want what they want) on each issue and rank them for yourself
and the other members of the group if you can’t rank them
you don’t know enough about your opponent
o Better to ask questions and learn about opponents interests
and priorities than to revel information about one’s own
o Affects how members interests must be considered by the
group before it can make a decision
Dictatorship one person decides
Oligarchy few people decide
Simple Majority more than half the group
Two-Thirds Majority self explanatory
Consensus about 2/3rds majority with the minority
drawing their dissent
Unanimity all group members decide
1. Providing mechanisms to help the group integrate diverse and
conflicting information into a high quality decision
