If human institutions are going to be costly, then they are not going to last long or be stable. In the human world the chain goes: church, aristocracy, freeman, serfs, men were higher than women on each chain. And then let us also think that our desires are insatiable. Going to be continually life of death and violence. It is a social contract to the extent that we all agree to stop all the war and violence: we need some sense of security and safety. It is the fear of the ruler that keeps us from overstepping the boundaries of our rights: they are not principles of moral behaviour, the ruler is just as nasty and immoral as the rest of us. 5 years in jail if they both confess. Fred will be free and joe will have 10 years. Joe will be free and fred will get 10 years in jail.
