PHIL 2923 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Coherentism, Reflective Equilibrium, Foundationalism
Document Summary
He doesn"t just present us with specific principles as theories we should adopt. He also has a whole discussion on how these principles are just. He has a whole conception of philosophical justification. There are 2 main ideas that rawls put forward that are seen as new and interesting. One we started talking about is the idea of the original position. We live in a society where people disagree about a lot of things, one of the things is what is a good way to lead your life. Connected to this, people disagree about how to set up the basic institutions of society, people don"t agree about what our state should be. Now rawls aims to make progress on the second question: despite the disagreement, how can we make progress on the questions of justice. The aim is to devise the original position in such a way that the principles that are chosen in that situation are accepted.
